I've updated three Xserve 2,1s (2x2.8GHz quad core) to El Capitan 10.11.2 - they previously had no drives/systems. Not only is the card extremely compact and fanless, but it's surprisingly powerful and is able to output rich audio over it's HDMI and DVI ports so negates the need for a separate USB audio-out dongle. As I mentioned above, I picked up a second-hand Asus GT 520 with 2 GB of VRAM for $20 to put in a friend's Xserve2,1.

I'm fairly sure the 7300GTs are still supported, though they seem quite large and power-hungry for what they are, and I don't imagine they'll enjoy driver support for very much longer. The Xserve3,1s used industry standard MXM video cards which aren't interchangeable with the Xserve2,1's proprietary mezzanine graphics unfortunately.

There is a hack involving bits and pieces of kexts from all over the shop to get some semblance of usability back in Mountain Lion, and I had some limited success in Mavericks too, but your best bet to avoid Remote Desktop performance issues is to install SwitchResX and disable any imaginary monitors associated with the X1300 at startup.

SWITCHRESX YOSEMITE UPDATE

I've kept the X1300 mezzanine video cards in my Xserves intact for the odd occasion when I need access to the boot screen, but once you've experienced the X1300 in all it's unbuffered, unaccelerated, unsupported glory you'll also understand why I use SwitchResX to automatically disable them on no the X1300 mezzanine graphics card doesn't prevent Mountain Lion and above from booting, but because Apple chose not to update their driver to 64-bitness, only 3 MB of VRAM is recognised and there's no hardware acceleration whatsoever. IPMI touch is a nifty little iOS app that issues basic commands and displays real-time fan and temperature data on your phone, which I've been using for several years and highly recommend. Enter "ipmitool -help" in your Terminal to get a quick rundown, or search for the man pages at. The power button on one of my Xserves stopped working about a year ago and the only way I can restart it or power on/off is through IPMI commands. While Server.app passively displays the LOM sensor readings and fan speeds in real-time, it's possible to do much more. Yes, the LOM doesn't know or care which non-baby-friendly cat or hard-to-reach Californian landmark is installed, or whether your Xserve has even managed to find a disk to boot - it is completely independent of the OS.

I tend to keep several operating systems on each disk I use in the Xserve so I can recover from unbootable mishaps (usually caused by Apple replacing my ist with their own) so this shouldn't be a problem, I hope! I put the MBP into target disk mode, connected it to my Xserve, added "Mac-F42289C8" to the plist (the second half of the file listing supported machine IDs is gone for good it seems) and booted it back up with it's main partition to fix permissions and create the disk image. After several failed attempts I realised that SIP had been active in the beta I'd installed, the only difference being that I'd booted back into Mavericks to make changes to it's base system. Not so fast! The /System/Library/CoreServices directory is listed in nf and is solely accessible by "booter". As soon as the new installation restarted and began asking setup questions I restarted back into the MBP's main partition to modify the ist and create a disk image of the fresh installation.

SWITCHRESX YOSEMITE PRO

I'd already updated my MacBook Pro to El Capitan when I set about creating a fresh installation on a smaller 12 GB partition I'd calved from it's SSD. It wasn't all smooth sailing though - I did run into the new System Integrity Protection during the installation process, but eventually got around it easily enough. I hadn't perceived any lag in the beta but the instantaneous menu and window redraws are noticeably quicker in the release. I thought I'd report back that the final release is up and running on my Xserve2,1.
